Kaz Mountains and Assos camping guide: mountain air, Aegean blue
One of Türkiye's favourite camping regions, with the waterfalls of Kazdağı National Park on one side and the ancient harbour of Assos on the other. A guide to campsites on the Gulf of Edremit and around Assos.
Teknovan Editorial Team ·

Ask people in Türkiye where to go camping and the Kaz Mountains (Kazdağları) come up again and again. Pine and fir forest, ice-cold streams, waterfalls, and just below, the calm sea of the Gulf of Edremit. At the western end of the range sits Assos, with its ancient harbour and Temple of Athena, and one of the best sunsets on the Aegean. The region lies in the northwest of the country, roughly between Çanakkale and Ayvalık. In this guide we cover Kaz Mountains campsites and Assos campsites together.
The area at a glance
| Area | What's there | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Gulf of Edremit (Zeytinli, Güre, Akçay, Altınoluk) | Forest camps at the foot of the mountain, streamside pitches | Hikers, families |
| Kazdağı National Park | Waterfalls, canyons, trails | Trekking and day trips |

The Gulf of Edremit: where the mountain meets the sea
The southern slopes of the Kaz Mountains run down to the Gulf of Edremit. The coastline between Zeytinli, Güre, Akçay and Altınoluk is full of campsites, many of them beside streams, under plane trees and pines. The air here is famous: the cool wind coming off the mountain means you sleep comfortably at night even in the hottest part of summer.
Hasanboğuldu and Sutüven Waterfall are two natural sights that are easy to reach from the gulf. The stone houses of Adatepe village and the nearby Altar of Zeus give you, after a short walk, a view over the whole gulf.

Kazdağı National Park: trails and canyons
The national park is known as one of the richest areas for biodiversity in Türkiye. Waymarked trails and canyon walks suit every level. Rules on camping and fires inside the park are strict. Stay at the permitted campsites around it and head out for day trips from there.
Assos and Ayvacık: ancient harbour and sunset
Assos (Behramkale) is a hilltop village where the ruins of the Temple of Athena look across to Lesbos (Midilli in Turkish). The harbour below, with its stone buildings and fish restaurants, is the heart of the area. Sokakağzı, Kadırga bay and the coves along the shore have plenty of campsites and glamping places. They are close together but very different in character: some quiet and child-free, some loud with music and busy. Read the reviews before you choose.

When to go
- April-June: Spring on the mountain and the waterfalls at their fullest. The best time for walking.
- July-August: The Assos coves get very busy, but the camps at the foot of the mountain stay cool.
- September-October: Warm sea, fewer people. September is the best month for an Assos sunset.
Notes for campervan travellers
- The road down to Assos harbour is steep and narrow. Do not take a campervan down it. Pick a campsite on the coast road instead.
- Turning a long van on the roads up to the mountain villages can be tricky. Plan day trips in a smaller vehicle.
- Streamside camps are humid. Keep the van ventilated so electronics and bedding stay dry.
