Bodrum is not just hotels and beach clubs. Across the peninsula you will find cheap, quiet options, from tent pitches and caravan parks to farm camps and glamping.
Teknovan Editorial Team ·

Say Bodrum and most people think of hotels, marinas and nightlife. But in the back lanes of the peninsula, among olive groves and mandarin orchards, camping culture is alive and well. Young people with tents, retirees spending the winter in their vans and families slipping away for a glamping weekend all share the same peninsula. Bodrum-Milas airport (BJV) is about 35 km from town, which makes it an easy fly-in start. In this guide we cover Bodrum campsites and how to see the area without spending a fortune.
The peninsula at a glance
| Area | Highlights | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Around Bodrum town | Castle, bazaar, easy transport | Town and sea in one, by campervan |
| Göltürkbükü | Quiet coves on the north coast | Tent camping, swimming |
| Gümüşlük | Ancient harbour of Myndos, sunset | A dinner and sunset outing |
| Milas | Inland, on the road into Bodrum | Quiet glamping, history |
Bodrum town and around
Bodrum Castle with its Museum of Underwater Archaeology, the bazaar and the marina make up the centre of the peninsula. Campsites close to town are popular with campervan travellers because public transport is easy: you leave the van on your pitch and take a dolmuş (shared minibus) into town. The dolmuş network on the peninsula is extensive, so you can get between coves without a car.
Göltürkbükü and the north coast
Gölköy and Türkbükü on the north of the peninsula are known for calm water and wooden jetties. That you can still pitch a tent here between the luxury hotels says a lot about Bodrum's camping tradition. The north coast is more sheltered from the wind than the south.

Gümüşlük: sunset and Myndos
Gümüşlük, at the western tip of the peninsula, is a fishing village built on the remains of ancient Myndos. The shallow water you can wade across to Tavşan Adası (Rabbit Island) and the fish restaurants on the shore fill up at sunset. Wherever you are camping, keep one evening for Gümüşlük.
Milas: Bodrum's quiet back garden
Milas, on the road into Bodrum, stands out for its old town and olive groves. Stops such as Beçin Castle and the ancient city of Iasos turn a camping trip into a bit of a history tour. If you want to stay away from the crowds on the peninsula, the glamping sites here are a good choice.

When to go
- May-June: The sea is mild and prices are below the summer peak.
- July-August: Bodrum's most expensive and crowded time. Campsites fill up too, so book ahead.
- September-October: Warm sea, the crowds have gone. The best time to camp in Bodrum.
- Winter: The peninsula goes quiet. There are long-stay options for campervan travellers who want to spend the winter somewhere mild.
Notes for campervan travellers
- The cove roads get very busy in summer. Instead of hopping from cove to cove in a long vehicle, take the dolmuş.
- Pitches near the town can be noisy on summer nights. Ask for a quiet one.
- For a winter stay, agree the monthly rate and the electricity charge in advance.
